Who We Are

Energy operators built this. Regulated AI sharpened it.

ModalPoint is a Houston AI governance practice with a 25-year energy lineage and a registered framework, Digital Information Governance®, for AI-influenced decisions that have to remain defensible in front of a regulator, a board, or a plaintiff.

/01 Lineage

From energy commercialization to AI decision governance.

ModalPoint was built inside the energy sector as a commercialization advisory — supporting high-stakes, capital-intensive decisions in markets where precision, accountability, and defensibility were already the price of admission.

That work exposed a consistent gap: when decisions carry real financial and regulatory consequences, documentation matters more than speed. Then AI arrived. The rigor that belonged on capital decisions started being skipped on AI-influenced ones. The exposure piled up.

ModalPoint pivoted to address that gap directly — bringing governance, structure, and defensibility to AI-influenced decision environments. We did not abandon energy. We brought what energy taught us about defensible decisions into a category that desperately needs it. The operator-facing commercialization advisory the network was built on continues at EWR Digital — Matt's 25+ year Houston firm — now serving as ModalPoint's operating backbone.

ModalPoint’s discipline came from a decade-plus of go-to-market work inside energy: buyer research, market-entry strategy, product launches, and route-to-market validation for technology and industrial companies selling into oil and gas. Five of those engagements, by profile:

/05 Practice questions

About the practice.

Common questions from operators evaluating whether ModalPoint is the right firm for an AI governance engagement.

Q01 How does ModalPoint's Houston-energy lineage actually inform AI governance?
Energy operators have spent 50 years building defensibility into capital decisions — deal memos, committee approvals, audit trails, sign-offs, signed-off-on engineering reviews. The decision discipline is already there for capital. AI broke that discipline because it moves faster than the existing governance. ModalPoint's job is to bring the same operator-grade decision rigor over to the AI workflow. The lineage is the credibility — we sound like the customer, not the vendor.
Q02 What's the relationship between ModalPoint and EWR Digital?
EWR Digital is Matt's 25+ year Houston digital advisory practice (CEO, 100% owner since Dec 2024). ModalPoint is the AI decision governance practice that EWR Digital acquired in February 2026 to expand into the AI category. ModalPoint operates as its own brand and product line; EWR Digital provides the operational backbone, team, and 25+ year energy-sector relationships.
Q03 Is Matt the only person delivering engagements?
Matt leads every engagement. The delivery team is drawn from EWR Digital's senior practitioners (audit, compliance, engineering review, content) plus a small bench of specialists for cross-border (EU AI Act) and OT-touching (control room) work. Engagements are scoped against the right team — we don't run a Tier 2 cross-border binder with a Tier 1 Texas-only team.
Q04 What's the connection to OGGN and the oil and gas podcast network?
Matt is fractional CMO of OGGN (Oil and Gas Global Network) and host of the Oil & Gas Sales & Marketing podcast — 80+ episodes interviewing the same energy operators ModalPoint serves. The podcast is the operator-relationship layer; ModalPoint is what those operators engage when their AI exposure becomes a board-level question. The two reinforce each other.
Q05 What does a ModalPoint engagement cost, and how long does it take?
Most engagements begin with the 5-Day Governance Readiness Assessment: $5,000, five working days, fixed scope. You receive written output, an honest recommendation, and a binder you can hand to a regulator, a board, or a plaintiff. Larger Digital Information Governance® build-outs and decision-audit programs are scoped and quoted against the work, not sold off a rate card.
Q06 What does the 5-Day Governance Readiness Assessment actually deliver?
A written assessment of where your AI-influenced decisions lack documentation, validation, and defensibility — before they are challenged. The output is a regulator-ready binder: what was reviewed, what the gaps are, and a prioritized recommendation. The deliverable is the document, not a slide deck.
Q07 Does ModalPoint help with TRAIGA compliance specifically?
Yes. ModalPoint works inside the Texas Responsible AI Governance Act (TRAIGA, HB 149) framework, and Matt is a Certified AI Auditor (CAIA) who tracks its implementation closely. Engagements map your AI-influenced decisions to what an operator must be able to show when the AG complaint portal opens on September 1, 2026.
Q08 How is ModalPoint different from a law firm or a Big Four advisory?
A law firm tells you what the rule says. A Big Four advisory hands you a framework and a team that has never run an energy operation. ModalPoint was built inside the energy sector and owns the Digital Information Governance® framework outright. The work is decision-defensibility for operators, written in the language operators already use for capital decisions.
