How we measured this

We put 66 buyer questions, drawn from 5 disclosed categories, to ChatGPT + Perplexity, repeating each question 12 times per engine because these engines do not answer the same question the same way twice. Each company is scored against every answer in its own segment, so a company had 264 to 408 chances to be named (288for the median company); segments differ because they carry different numbers of questions. We recorded whether the company was named in the answer ("named") and whether its domain was cited as a source ("cited"). Categories are disclosed; individual prompts are withheld so the measurement cannot be gamed by a single company reading this page.

Named and cited are reported as two separate rates. They are never averaged or combined into one score. A visibility share is not a rank: two companies a few points apart are statistically the same to these engines once the confidence interval is drawn.

Anchor-tier companies (Halliburton, Energy Transfer, Enverus, McKinsey and similar reference giants) are shown in the list but excluded from the invisible-middle count. They set the ceiling; the finding is about the market beneath them.

The company list is ModalPoint's own curation of 69 Texas energy companies (list version 0.2-curated), not a market census. Where a company was acquired, the row stays under its own brand with the parent disclosed. The list is revised as acquisitions close; a company missing from it was not measured, and is not counted either way.

"A visibility share is not a rank. Two firms a few points apart are statistically the same firm to these engines."
