By Matthew Bertram·

From the ModalPoint Archive. This post dates from 2014, when ModalPoint operated as an oil & gas commercialization advisory founded by Mark LaCour — who remains a ModalPoint strategic advisor today. ModalPoint has since grown into decision intelligence for energy: go-to-market intelligence for selling into oil & gas, plus AI decision governance — see who we are now. The analysis below reflects the industry context of 2014.

Okay. Today, we’re going to talk about a huge opportunity and that opportunity is intersection of technology in the oil and gas industry.

Now, for a long time the oil and gas industry was shall we say a little bit slow in adapting new technology, but boy, has all that change. If you’re a software, hardware, or any type of technology company, you damn well better be looking at oil and gas because there’s millions and millions and millions of dollars to be made. And it’s being driven by a couple of things, right?

First thing it’ being driven by is the new unconventional resources. Think fracking, right? You got to be light, nimble, and there’s new technologies. Next thing is things like the digital oilfield, field instrumentation being done remotely with an array of sensors that didn’t exist a few years ago. And there was all this sensor data, you have big data issues you have to worry about, right? And then, there are things like workflow and changing workforce, The Great Crew Change, all that means that there’s a need for bigger and stronger and newer technology.

And then, with all the rules and regulations environmental concerns, reliability is important. Once again, where is that intersect? Technology. And then, think about the supply chain. The supply chain is enormous in driving operational efficiencies in a global supply chain crosses the intersection of technology.

So for the biggest baddest demand for technology, you got to be looking at the oil and gas industry. It’s crazy. I mean, I know there’s hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of companies that are entering the oil and gas market because they are oil and gas focused. So, if you’re a technology company, your ass better be looking at the oil and gas industry.

We’re going to actually put a couple things up here. So first thing, we’ll give you a free SSR Report talking about the new needs in oil and gas for technology.
